The Debt Ceiling Challenge

debtIt’s time to challenge the president directly about the nation’s debt crisis. The House Republicans need to put a plan together, pass the plan, call a news conference, and challenge he president to put up or shut up.

The President has been using the bully pit quite effectively, being first to make the challenge, albeit an empty one. In his news conference addressing the debt ceiling recently, President Obama rattled off his refusal to negotiate with congress over the debt ceiling while using quite a few cute little phrases and jambs to define his position.

“We are not a nation of deadbeats” said Obama. Well I would take exception to that – we are rapidly becoming such. More people are on welfare, food stamps, and disability, than any time in our history and we are not a nation of deadbeats?

“I am not going to let Congress hold a gun to the head of the American people.”

Actually, you are holding a gun to the head of the American people Mr. President by insisting that the nation increase its debt and place it squarely on the backs of our children and grandchildren.

The President’s wonderful metaphor comparing the national debt to a restaurant bill (which was more like dyslexic fairy tale) was my personal favorite; “You can’t go to the restaurant, eat all you want an refuse to pay for it,” said the President.

Well 2 problems with this little dyslexic fairy tale; One if you pay for the meal with a credit card you haven’t paid the bill Mr. President you have merely shifted the debt from one place to another.

That seems to be what Obama is best at; shifting the debt somewhere else, to some other time. And the proof is in the request to raise the debt ceiling (or credit card balance) on the American people yet again.

And two, we don’t want you to stiff the restaurant Mr. President, we want you to stay home and eat a tuna fish sandwich like the rest of us have to. If and when you do go back to the restaurant take cash and pay for the meal when you are done.

President Obama is not serious about deficit reduction, never has been, never will be. If he was he would not have reneged on his promise to allow the sequestration cuts to go forward if a deal wasn’t reached.

I propose a way to force Obama to come clean about deficit reduction – no more talk – just action. It’s time for the Conservative leaders to take the lead on these issues instead of constantly defending themselves.

Here’s the plan:

If Obama is serious about having reduced spending by $1.3 Trillion over ten years (which he has claimed many times) then these targets should be easily obtainable and there should be no need to negotiate further.

The Republican leaders should put together a 4 year agreement, on an all or nothing deal, regarding the debt ceiling. Give the President the authority to raise the debt ceiling by $1.3 Trillion this year, but in return he also has to agree to the following debt ceiling increase limits for the following 3 years:

  • 2013 – $1.3 Trillion
  • 2014 –  $900 Billion
  • 2015-   $770 billion
  • 2016-   $640 billion

These targets should be easily reached, especially when you consider the Democrats have already got their tax increase on those evil rich people.

It’s time to get serious. It’s time to find out who is serious and who isn’t. Because the National Debt is a serious problem now, now is the time to put up or shut up.

We cannot afford to let President Obama kick the can down the road to the end of his term, leaving behind a bankrupt America.
